@susanlowe It's all still in the early adopter stage as far as being a business tool. My thoughts are that one should dig the well before they need the water.

36 months from now those that invested in the tools and creating a following I believe will create some great companies and literally dominate some sectors. Gary Vaynerchuk does a great "un-keynote" in this video on the topic (Pardon the F-bombs) http://garyvaynerchuk.com/2008/06/05/when-do-you-know-you-have-a-community/

I'm not afraid of social media per se and I have no problem with the technology, but I don't see the payback from spending that amount of time online. I know it's quick and easy to twitter, but it's just another account to log-in to and maintain. I'm building my social media portfolio slowly so that I can make sure I maintain a reasonable level of participation without having these gadgets taking over my life. Also, I think there's a lot of mindless time-wasting on sites like Facebook that distract and detract from the value as a B2B tool.

If I were in the B2C sector however, I'd be doing way more social media.

i too am a boomer although i do know how to use these internets - my hesitation, especially about twitter, was cost/benefit - it looked trivial when i first looked at it and myspace and fb looked like possible major time suck, and indeed, i now use many of them and i'm spending hours and hours reading, watching, listening, responding - the upside is finding others who share similar interests and learning how to use these media to network, collaborate, and move the open money meme.

@Gwyn a non-threatening corporate training program or one-on-one social media coach would probably help.

I think there are a lot of executives who are, um, of a certain age (Boomers like me) who may have difficulty with the basics, technology-wise. (Keyboarding comes to mind for instance). And while I believe they appreciate the benefits of the internet and what it can do, in my experience many tend to hire people who know about "that technology stuff" and leave it up to them to do it. So, I think it is a matter of trust, and getting some help in taking a leap into unknown places.

@kim I think there's a bigger fun factor too! A lot more exciting and rewarding than writing ad copy or banging on doors for me.

I think a lot of people are scared of the 'time commitment'. What they don't realize is that Social Media can actually save so much time.
