Guerrilla Social Media Marketing – Truth

Here’s another excerpt from the book I’m working on with Jay Conrad Levinson.

Truth:

Marketing is the truth made fascinating. Guerrilla social media marketing is about using all of the tools available to tell your fascinating brand story in a way that drives trust, consent and profits. With that said, guerrillas tell the truth and they tell the whole truth. With social media networks and platforms the millions of people that inhabit them quickly detect lies or half-truths. Misinformation or false pretenses can be profitable in the short-term but over the long term not telling the truth will destroy the customer’s trust, credibility and ultimately your fragile reputation.

I recommend using business rating services if you are new to the market and if you have the possibility to invest money with such a service. I will tell you that it can help you a lot, but it ain't free.
  • Well said Shane (and Jay...). With social media, it's important to not only share the truth (or else get called out on lying), but it's important to make the truth so powerful that people want to share it with others via social media.

When putting content out into the social media space, companies need to understand (and architect to some extent) how readers will understand the content and if they'll feel compared to share and spread the content. That's part of how viral content goes viral.

And yes, if it's not the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, then the social media world will call you out on this and you'll have a viral social media s**t storm to deal with...not fun.

So true. Just this week I watched some more s**t storms erupt because companies weren't backing their marketing. Viral can be good and bad and if we're in the social web space we better be truthful.
